The Power of Decluttering Small Things

One of the biggest ways I keep our home feeling light and peaceful is by decluttering — not in huge dramatic sweeps (though those can be fun too!) — but in small, steady rhythms.

Every season, we go through all our clothes.

If something is too small, ripped, or stained… it goes.

If we’re bringing new clothes in for a new season, the old ones have to leave first.

The same is true with toys.

We don’t have a huge playroom — just a tiny makeshift “closet” under the stairs that holds most of our toys. When that space starts to overflow, we know it’s time to re-evaluate what we actually play with.

We dump it all out, sort through every piece, and toss the broken toys. The kids choose items to donate — toys they’ve outgrown or lost interest in. The toys they love the most stay downstairs, and the rest get rotated back to their rooms.

I go through the kitchen every now and then too — letting go of gadgets or dishes I haven’t used in months. Little by little, I’ve found myself keeping only what is essential, with a few occasional-use favorites.

Decluttering feels great.

It frees up more than space — it frees up my mind.

When our home has less clutter, I have less to worry about caring for. It’s like decluttering my home makes room inside my head and my heart too.

And honestly?

I don’t regret what I’ve let go.

There were things I held onto for years — even kept in a storage unit while we lived on the bus. Sentimental things. Décor I thought I would hang in our “future” home. But when the time came, those items no longer mattered the way I thought they would. They weren’t worth the emotional weight I had been giving them.

Letting them go felt like breathing deeper.

You don’t have to keep everything to remember every season.

Sometimes holding onto less actually helps us cherish more.

If another mama is reading this, I hope she knows:

You don’t have to manage the overwhelm —

you can release it.

Start with one small space — a drawer, a basket of toys, a stack of clothes.

And let the lightness that follows be proof…

That little steps can make a big difference. ✨
